  • USS George Washington supports typhoon relief in Philippines

  • WASHINGTON – The U.S. Navy is supporting Operation DAMAYAN, the humanitarian efforts in response to Typhoon Haiyan in the Republic of the Philippines, with the departure of the USS George Washington.
    Petty Officer 2nd Class Larry T. Anderson Jr., a 2001 graduate of Plaquemine Senior High School, is currently serving aboard the vessel as an Operations Specialist responsible for operating surveillance and altitude radars’ identification friend or foe.
    The George Washington Carrier Strike Group departed Hong Kong Nov. 12 by order of the U.S. Secretary of Defense.
    USS George Washington is an American nuclear-powered super carrier, the sixth ship in the Nimitz class and the fourth United States Navy ship to be named after George Washington, the first President of the United States.
