  • NEW ORLEANS - Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne and the Battle of New Orleans Bicentennial Commission are unveiling plans for commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans.
Events will be held throughout the state next year to commemorate the time an outnumbered, ragtag group of Louisianans led by Gen. Andrew Jackson with the help of pirate Jean Lafitte defeated the British army in Chalmette.
Events including museum exhibits and re-enactments will culminate with a formal commemoration Jan. 8, 2015, the 200th anniversary of the Battle.
“The Battle of New Orleans has always interested me,” Dardenne said. “It is important to commemorate the Battle and use its 200th anniversary as an opportunity to educate Louisianans and the rest of the world about what is widely regarded as the Americans’ greatest victory of the War of 1812.”
In addition to events, Dardenne unveiled the 2014 general-issue license plate. It features the Battle of New Orleans Commission logo and www.LouisianaTravel.com. Plate distribution will begin at motor vehicle offices throughout the state in early 2014.
The Office of the Lt. Governor is also producing an education curriculum to be distributed throughout the state to K – 12 teachers. The curriculum will focus on the Battle and its importance in positioning Louisiana as a powerhouse in the young nation.
