CONWAY, Ark. — The University of Central Arkansas Bears took two of the three Southland Conference Football Player of the Week honors on Monday after their convincing 66-31 victory over Stephen F. Austin on Saturday.
Junior quarterback Ryan Howard of Vestavia Hills, Ala., was named the Offensive Player of the Week and freshman receiver/kick returner Jatavious “Jay” Wilson of Bastrop, earned the Special Teams Player of the Week honor.
Howard, in just his second career start, completed 18 of 30 passes for 403 yards and 4 touchdowns, just the 11th 400-yard passing game by an individual in UCA history. He led the Bears to 38 points in the third quarter and to a season-high 681 yards of total offense on the day. UCA scored on six consecutive possessions in the period.
Wilson, a 5-foot-9, 171-pound freshman, returned the second-half kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown, his second scoring return of the season, and also had an 80-yard run from scrimmage and caught five passes for 71 yards. His 314 yards of total offense broke the 20-year old record of 304 yards set by Tyree Davis against Arkansas-Monticello in 1993.
Wilson is leading the nation in kickoff returns at the FCS level with an average of 38.4 yards. He had a 93-yarder for a touchdown in the season opener against Incarnate Word.
UCA (5-3, 2-1) is on the road at Northwestern State in Natchitcoches this weekend.
