The man accused of pulling the trigger in a fatal shooting Oct. 21 went before a judge Thursday morning for a bond hearing and the second suspect in the shooting turned himself in to the Bastrop Police Department.

Jaquaious Bennett was being sought in connection with the shooting which happened around 3:20 p.m. Monday afternoon in the vicinity of N. Marable and Van. Bennett surrendered this morning and after being questioned about his involvement in the incident, was released. According to 4th District Assistant District Attorney Steve Sylvester, Bennett's involvement ended with him being there.

"After questioning Mr. Bennett, we feel he had nothing to do with the shooting and, in turn, all charges against him have been dropped," Sylvester said.

Elijahwan Johnson, who was arrested Tuesday afternoon on charges of attempted second degree murder and conspiracy in connection with the case with the charges being upgraded to second degree murder after the death of the victim, had his bond set at $500,000 Thursday morning. If he is convicted on the charge, he faces is a mandatory life sentence.
