The tradition of area merchants giving candy to trick or treaters began when Vereen started the position as Main Street Director and has increasingly grown throughout the years to include the parking lot of the Visitors Center as well as on the grounds of the Courthouse, which is where the Bastrop Police Department, the Morehouse Parish Sheriff's Office, the Bastrop Fire Department and Med-Life Ambulance have vehicles on display for children to look at.
"This is one of my favorite events each year," Vereen said. "It not only gives children a safe place to trick or treat but also lets parents see the businesses downtown that they might not have been aware of. And, hopefully, those parents will remember the merchants who went out of their way to provide safe treats for their children and will return to do business with them."
Merchants wanting to participate can contact Vereen at 283.3308 and are encouraged to dress up for the occasion.
Witch Way will be held from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. and, as always, safety concerns will be met by both the BPD and MPSO.
