Bastrop Learning Academy students in grades sixth, seventh and eighth had a field day Oct. 8, touring the Morehouse Parish Courthouse, the Morehouse Parish Sheriff's Office and the Bastrop Daily Enterprise. They finished off the day with lunch at a local restaurant.
During their tour of the newspaper, students were walked through the entire process of building each day's paper. They began in the front office, where they were introduced to General Manager Kristin Stewart and the administrative staff.
Students were then taken into the editorial department and shown the various equipment used and were introduced to the writers. From there, they were shown how the paper goes from the computer screen onto large negatives, which are burned onto tin plates. The plates then go through a process in which the "burned" parts pick up ink, revealing them.
Students finished the tour by seeing the press in action and were each given a newspaper to take with them.
The Enterprise welcomes other classes to tour the facility. For more information or to set up a tour, contact Dee Tubbs at 281.4421or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
