Georgia-Pacific is donating $4,342 to Morehouse Parish United Fund.

A reception was held last week to celebrate the donation. The dispersing of the money raised through the fund is managed by the Bastrop/Morehouse Chamber of Commerce.

"We just appreciate this so much," Chamber of Commerce Director Dorothy Ford said.

The fund, begun by concerned Morehouse Parish residents in 1959, disperses funds to agencies within Morehouse Parish, who in turn help citizens of the parish. There are several agencies selected to receive funds including The ARC of Morehouse, Crippled Children and Adults fund, Morehouse Mental health, D.A.R.E., Morehouse Cancer Fund, Reserve Deputies and the Humane Society.

International Paper Co. and its employees had always been the largest contributor to the fund in past years, but with it's closing, a great need had arisen to continue the support of the well deserving agencies which have depended on the fund for years. Georgia-Pacific decided to offer their support. Employees of the company who live in Morehouse Parish donated money and the company has agreed to match their donations.

"It's really awesome for them to remember us an donate to organizations with the Sheriff's office and other worthwhile organizations in our community," Sheriff Mike Tubbs said.

Georgia-Pacific is one of the world's leading manufacturers of tissue, pulp, paper, packaging, building products and related chemicals. The company has three facilities in Louisiana, in addition to a wood and supply office at Port Hudson. The West Monroe location handles packaging.

In Louisiana, Georgia-Pacific employs approximately 1,350 people directly, and those jobs create an additional 4,000 jobs indirectly. Total compensation and benefits for Louisiana employees is approximately $110 million directly, resulting in $286 million in combined wages and benefits.

"Our company also strongly believes in making significant contributions that support our neighbors and the environment," their website says. "Through the Georgia-Pacific Foundation and various facility programs, GP employees work closely with non-profit organizations to promote growth and sustainability in the community."
