  • A celebration at the Morehouse Parish Head Start was held Tuesday morning to kick off Head Start Awareness Month.
Students were able to play in hoppers as well as tour an ambulance, a patrol car and see the Morehouse Parish Sheriff's Office DARE Unit in action.
The morning began with Bastrop Mayor Arthur Jones declaring October Head Start Month in Bastrop and Sheriff Mike Tubbs as well as others spoke to the students about the program and what it afforded them.
"We may well be in the presence of the future President of the United States," Billy Rabon, President of the Morehouse Community Improvement Organization said.
Assistant Director Terry Matthews told the teachers and students about a grant received from Vantage Health Plan, which helped make the day of celebration possible. Vantage employees Kim Hudson and Kim Nelson presented the check to Director Ethel Robinson, board members and students.
On October 22, 1982, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed October Head Start Awareness Month. Thirty-one years after the proclamation, his words still inspire communities to celebrate the program:
"Perhaps the most significant factor in the success of Head Start has been the involvement of parents, volunteers and the community. Their commitment and the services provided by dedicated Head Start staff have been instrumental in creating a quality program that truly provides young children with a 'head start' in life."
