  • Morehouse Magnet School celebrated its status as a National Blue Ribbon School for 2013 with a "Blue Ribbon Celebration" on Tuesday Oct. 1 which included a program and a balloon release.
The National Blue Ribbon Schools award honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools where students perform at very high levels or where significant improvements are being made in students' levels of achievement.
Principal Gwen Seay started the program off by welcoming guests as well as students and teachers. Special guest speakers included Mayor Arthur Jones, Rep. Katrina Jackson, Sen. Mike Walsworth and Morehouse Parish Schools Superintendent Dr. George Noflin Jr.
Jackson spoke about how she keeps telling people that great people come out of Morehouse Parish. Walsworth promised to bring ice cream sandwiches on Thursday for students and teachers. It was also announced that students would be chosen to represent Morehouse Magnet at the Department of Education's recognition ceremony Nov. 18 through 19.
The kindergarten sang a song about counting in Spanish. Their spanish teacher, Sarah Green, said the students could count to 10, but the song focused on counting from one to five.
Student Angel Conway did a cheer and the audience joined in as the eighth graders prepared to hand out the balloons for the balloon release. The rest of the students then went outside where they were each handed a balloon and on the count of three, they released them and watched as they floated away.
Following the program, guests were treated to cake and ice cream and students received a treat during lunch.
