Bastrop High School will host its annual College/Career Night Sept. 10. Colleges and Universities from nearby and across Louisiana will be in attendance along with cosmetology schools, military branches and La. Workforce.
Colleges and Universities in attendance will the University of Arkansas, Louisiana State University, University of Louisiana at Monroe, Grambling University, Louisiana Tech, Delta Community College, McNeese State University and Career Technical College. There will also be military branches and beauty schools like Cloyd's Beauty School represented. La. Workforce will be there to talk about different careers.
Information will be provided about new college admission requirements.The major change will be for the graduating class of 2014 according to Bastrop High School Counselor Althia Brooks.
"Starting next year, colleges will require an 18 in English and a 19 in Math on the ACTs," Brooks said.
"No remedial courses will be offered at these schools."
Students will also get information on financial aid options, scholarship requirements and deadlines and the Taylor Opportunity Program for Students. TOPS is Louisiana's premier program of state merit-based scholarships for Louisiana residents who attend either one of the Louisiana public colleges or universities, schools that are a part of the Louisiana Community and Technical College System, institutions that are of the Louisiana Association of Independent Colleges and Universities or approved propriety and cosmetology schools.
"We hope they [the students] are able to narrow down their choices for college and see other options that are out there," Brooks said.
