  • With the majority of students owning cell phones today, schools have come up with different policies regarding the use of them on school grounds. Both the Morehouse Parish School District and Prairie View Academy allow for students to bring their cell phones with them to school, but students are not allowed to use them on school property during the school day. Bastrop High School allows students to keep cell phones on their person if required for after school activities, but students must not be caught using them unless they have received permission from a school administrator. The Morehouse Parish School Board's Policy manual lists the following penalties for middle school and high school students caught using cell phones at school: 1st Infraction- Parent notified, cell phone confiscated, the student is place in Saturday detention and a parent must come to the school or designated location, after student completes required Saturday detention, to pick up cell phone. 2nd Infraction- Parent notified, the cell phone is confiscated for 15 school days, the student is placed in Saturday detention and a parent must come to the school or designated location to pick up the cell phone after confiscation period has expired. 3rd Infraction- Parent notified, the cell phone is confiscated for 30 days, the student is placed in Saturday detention and a parent must come to the school or designated location to pick up the cell phone after confiscation period has expired. 4th Infraction- Parent notified and the student receives an official suspension for habitual violation of school rules and/or willful disobedience, as applicable. The cell phone is confiscated for 30 school days, the student is placed in Saturday detention and parent must come to the school or designated location to pick up the cell phone after confiscation period has expired. If a student violates the cell phone policy with another phone during the period when a cell phone is confiscated, the 3rd infraction procedure would immediately apply to this student. Prairie View Academy requires that students with cell phones not use them during school hours. Each classroom has a box or a basket on the teacher's desk where students can place their cell phones during class. If a student's phone goes off or they are caught using it during school hours, they will have to pay a fine to get it back. Fines are as follows: 1st Infraction- $25 2nd Infraction- $50 3rd Infraction- $75 4th Infraction- $100 Any infractions after the fourth will result in an expulsion hearing with the board. Students and parents should pay close attention to their school's policy regarding cell phones. Students need to make sure to follow the rules and keep cell phones turned off during school hours.
