Grambling State University's basketball staff has strong ties to Notre Dame.
Head coach Joseph Price and his top assistant, Ray Martin, both played at Notre Dame for coach Richard “Digger” Phelps. Both earned their degrees from Notre Dame, Price in sociology, Martin in economics.
Martin has been involved in two of college basketball's most memorable moments.
As a player, Martin was a point guard on the Notre Dame team that ended UCLA's record 88-game winning streak in 1974.
Martin began his college coaching career as the head freshman coach at Harvard in 1977, before spending eight seasons as an assistant to the late Jim Valvano at North Carolina State. In 1983, the Wolfpack upset heavily-favored Houston in the national championship game.
Martin's coaching career includes a three-year head coaching stint at Long Island University. He has also worked as an assistant at SMU, Tennessee, Shaw University, Florida Atlantic, Miami (Ohio), Fordham and South Carolina State.
