An early morning wreck has claimed the life of a Hamburg, Ark. man Louisiana State Police Troopers responded to the one vehicle crash at 2:55 a.m. on U.S. Highway 425 north of Bastrop. The driver, Derek Kilcrease, 23, of Hamburg, Ark. was traveling north in a 2007 Chevrolet Impala when he ran off the right side of the road, drove back onto the road before running off the right side of the road a second time and overturning. Along with Kilcrease was Heather Aulds of Hamburg and Christopher Savage of Hamburg. None were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. Kilcrease was not injured; Aulds suffered minor injuries but refused treatment and Savage was ejected from the vehicle and suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Morehouse Parish Coroner's Office. Impairment is suspected. A toxicology sample was taken and submitted for analysis. Kilcrease was charged with vehicular homicide and simple criminal damage to property and was booked in the Morehouse Parish Jail. If convicted on both charges, Kilcrease faces up to a $16,000 fine and up to 30 years in prison. The crash remains under investigation. Wearing a seatbelt is the single most effective thing motorists can do to protect themselves from injury in the event of a crash. Louisiana state law requires vehicle occupants in all seating positions to be properly restrained, day and night. Troop F has investigated 32 fatal crashes which have resulted in 35 deaths so far this year.
