  • Respect.
That was one word many former coworkers and colleagues used to describe coaching legend Rodger Causey, who coached for many years at Leesville Junior High School as well at Leesville High School. Causey passed away Aug. 7 at the age of 64.
Causey was a longtime coach at both the high school and junior high level, including serving many years as head coach of the junior high team, also spending several years as an assistant at the high school level.
Many of his former coworkers and administrators respected Causey both as a coach and an educator, including current Vernon Parish School District Superintendent Jackie Self.
"Roger coached football at Leesville Junior High School while I was the principal there, and Roger displayed all the attributes of a good teacher and a coach," he said earlier this week. "Roger was organized, enthusiastic about his work, and most of all, respected by his students and coworkers.
"Roger was very successful as a coach at Leesville Junior High School," Self said. "His successes were a result of his hard work and his students being able to achieve at their highest level."
"'Coach Causey provided a tremendous service to the kids of the Leesville community, doing it for many years, establishing a record at Leesville Junior High School that will probably never be broken," added Tom Neubert, also of the Vernon Parish School Board.
Others noted that Causey had a hand in developing many of the star players who came out of Leesville, including Cecil Collins and Michael Ford.
Many players honored Causey at his service Saturday morning, serving as honorary pallbearers and wearing their Wampus Cats jerseys.
Causey was known by many names over the years, including as husband, father, colleague, friend and teacher, but one that stuck in Vernon Parish was "Coach."
There's no doubt in anyone's minds that Rodger loved each one of his students and athletes, as well as the Leesville Wampus Cats. Something will be missing from Wampus Cat Stadium this year, but Coach's spirit will live on through each of the players' lives he has touched over his many years of involvement with the Leesville football program.
