  • SULPHUR — With their bats quiet for most of the game, the Post 131 Otto Candies relied on their pitching and defense to get through the opening round of the American Legion Baseball state tournament on Saturday in Sulphur.
Todd Porche allowed just three runs on six hits in seven and one-third innings while Post 131's defense turned two double plays and committed just a pair of errors in a 5-3 win over the Post 241 Delhomme Drillers.
"We worked on it diligently this week but our at bats just got worse and worse as the game went on," Post 131 coach David Baudry said. "You have to be able to put teams away in this tournament and we were fortunate to get a great pitching performance out of Todd (Porche).
“We had to make plays behind him. I am confident especially on turf with our infield defense but we have to be better offensively. We are not going to be able to compete with the better clubs in the tournament if we don't."
Post 131 had eight hits to Post 241's six but four of them came in the second inning. Nine-hole batter Chase Bagot came up big with two-outs and the bases loaded when he smashed a ball deep to center field for a three-run triple. Dylan Keller and Tyler Simmons hit back to back RBI singles to give Post 131 a 5-0 lead. But after that, they managed just four more hits and left seven on base along with leaving the bases loaded in the seventh.
Post 241 scored single runs in the third on a ground out by Devin Boutin, a sacrifice fly by Caleb Duboc in the fifth and squeeze bunt by Tristan LaPorte in the eighth that scored Jaren Neef.
Porche ran into a little trouble in the eighth but was saved by reliever Jared Laque. After Laporte's squeeze bunt, Laque caught Tanner Broussard looking at a third strike and needed just a handful of pitches in the ninth to pick up the save despite Josh Sogga reaching base on a two-out error.
Simmons led Post 131 at the plate going 3-for-5 with an RBI. Post 241's Duboc was the only other batter with multiple hits going 2-for-3.
Bryson Dogie was tagged with the loss after pitching seven innings. He allowed five runs, two of them earned, on eight hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Logan Abshire pitched the final two innings giving up no hits while walking one and hitting one batter.
Retif Oil 14, Post 241 Hymann Chiefs 4 (8 innings)
SULPHUR — Errors on the part of the Post 241 Hymann Chief turned a close game into a blowout as Retif Oil won 14-4 on Saturday in the first round of the American Legion baseball state tournament in Sulphur.
Page 2 of 3 - Post 241 committed nine errors and was held to just five hits by starter Glynn Hyer who finished with seven strike outs and just two walks in six and one-third innings of work.
Post 241 started the sixth inning leading 4-3 and turned an inning ending double play but not before Retif Oil (26-10) scored four runs with the help of three errors. Trailing 4-3, designated hitter Alex Galy hit a two-run single for the go ahead runs.
Post 241 took a 1-0 lead after a half inning of play but Retif Oil came back to take the lead on a pair of runs in the bottom of the first on an RBI sacrifice fly by Trent Forshag while Dylan Weston scored on a throwing error.
Retif Oil added five more runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth to end the game on the 10-run mercy rule.
Forshag led Retif Oil offensively going 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored. Brandon Fequeira went 2-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs while Ben Hess scored three times and went 1-for-3.
Trent Pascal was Post 241's top hitter going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored while Rhett Landry hit a two-run single in the sixth inning and finished 1-for-4. Austin Barious went 1-for-3 with an RBI single.
Josh Villagomez took the loss after giving up six runs on eight hits in five and one-third innings while recording three strikeout and eight walks.
