  • A farewell to Bastrop Legends: Johnny Owens

  • Longtime law enforcement officer Johnny Owens died surrounded by his family on July 9, 2013.

  • Owens was born Aug. 16, 1947 and served his country in the Army as a Sergeant with the field artillery. He also served in the Vietnam Conflict before returning to the area and joining the Bastrop Police Department. He served the citizens of Bastrop in this capacity for 25 years, retiring as a Captain. But, Owens did not end his law enforcement career with retirement. Under the administration Morehouse Parish Sheriff Bob Carter, he served as the Chief Deputy and continued to serve for both Sheriff Danny McGrew and Sheriff Mike Tubbs.
    "Johnny was an Officer of the Law my entire life," said Tubbs. "I worked with him at the Police Department and was honored to have him serve with me at the Sheriff's Office."
    "He was very passionate about serving the community and I learned a lot about law enforcement from just watching and being around him."
    Owens is survived by his wife, Rosemary Chunn Owens of Mer Rouge; his mother, Mattie Odell Scott of Mer Rouge; his three children, Dawn Chapman and her husband, Ron of Bastrop, Tammie Ricks of Bastrop and J.C. Phillips and wife, Kellie of Hamburg, Ark; four grandchildren, Amber Ricks, Harley Ricks, Lex Ann Phillips and Jace Phillips; a brother, Tim Scott and wife, Gay of Blanchard; a niece, Megan Scott of Blanchard; an aunt and uncle, whom he loved as a mother and father, Dean and James Vosburg and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family as well as two special friends, Butch Aulds and Ronnie Harper. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jimmy Kindley.
    Funeral services for Mr. Johnny Owens will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 11, 2013, at the Chapel of Cox Funeral Home of Bastrop. Interment with military honors will be at the Mer Rouge Cemetery. The family received friends from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, 2013 at Cox Funeral Home of Bastrop
