Bastrop resident Evan Downs, a sophomore at Ouachita Christian School, joined 4-H members from across the state to compete at the State Shooting Sports Match held at the Lake Charles Arena May 23-26. He competed in Senior Shotgun events, including Skeet, Trap and Sporting Clays. In the Senior Advanced – Skeet competition, Evan received fourth place overall.
The Louisiana 4-H Shooting Sports program encompasses the initiative goals of volunteer leadership, capacity building for youth and families, and the environmental stewardship with commitments from the Louisiana State University AgCenter. The 4-H Shooting Sports Program is an active program that is attractive to both youth and adults. The program uses positive learning and interaction with youth and adult role models. The disciplines are modeled after the National 4-H Shooting Sports Program and are administered by nationally certified-state leaders consisting of extension personnel and volunteers.
Four Morehouse Parish 4-H’ers competed in the Northeast District Horse Show at the Ike Hamilton Expo Center in West Monroe June 24 and 25. Those competing were Kody Boatright, Alfroncius Dowles Jr., Denim Hill and Chelsea Hunter. In Breakaway Roping, Kody (13 & Under), Denim (13 & Under) and Alfroncius (1st place, 14 & Over) received Purple Ribbons. Kody (13 & Under) and Alfroncius (1st place, 14 & Over) each received Purple Ribbons in the Tie-Down Roping event. For the Stake Race, Kody (2nd place, 13 & Under) took home a Purple Ribbon, and Chelsea (7th place, 14 & Over) was awarded a Red Ribbon. Purple Ribbons were awarded to both Kody (1st place, 13 & Under) and Chelsea (3rd place, 14 & Over) for Pole Bending. In Barrel Racing, Kody and Denim (5th and 10th place, respectively; 13 & Under) received Purple Ribbons and Chelsea (7th place, 14 & Over) took home a Red Ribbon. All four exhibitors qualified for the State Horse Show held July 9-13 at the Ike Hamilton Expo Center in West Monroe.
