In front of a standing room only crowd, Arthur Jones, retired City worker, was sworn in to the office of Mayor by City Court Judge Phillip Lester. His wife, Othie Jones, stood by his side as he swore to uphold the position of Mayor and perform all the duties required of the position.
"We have a lot of work to been done in Bastrop and a new identity to establish," Mayor Jones said. "First and foremost is to clean up the city. This is our first impression for those coming through and we want it to be a good impression."
The City Council, with newly elected District C Alderman Robert Shaw, also were sworn in by Judge Lester. Representing District A is Marvin Moore; District B is Obbie Johnson; District D is Roy Armstrong and District E is Howard Loche.
The ceremony was opened by District 16 Representative Katrina M. Jackson, followed by a prayer by the Rev. Kenneth Pack. The Bastrop Choraliers Ensemble performed "America the Beautiful and Vanessa Scates read the poem, "Risks."
Following the Mayor's speech, Morehouse Parish Police Jury President Terry Matthews sang "The National Anthem" and the program was closed with a benediction by the Rev. Steven R. Conley.
