  • Former Bastrop High and Louisiana Tech standout Bobby Brasher has been named to the Southland Conference 1970s All-Decade baseball team.
As part of its 50-year anniversary celebration, the SLC is recognizing All-Decade teams in various sports.
An outfielder, Brasher was named the SLC's Hitter of the Year in 1974 and earned All-Conference honors in 1974 and '76. He went on to play professionally in the Atlanta Braves' organization.
In addition to starring for the baseball team, Brasher was a wide receiver during his time at Bastrop High. He returned to Bastrop in the mid-1980s as head baseball coach and worked as an assistant football coach on Dickie Meeks' staff.
Tech leads the 1970s All-Decade team with 11 selections, followed by McNeese State with six, Louisiana-Lafayette, Texas-Arlington and Trinity with three, Arkansas State with two and Abilene Christian with one.
Joining Brasher on the team from Tech are pitchers Eddie Holman, Mike Jeffcoat, Randy McGilberry and Bill Norwood, catchers Chuck Bailey and Richie McAlister, second baseman Phil Willingham, shortstop Steve Lacy and outfielders Dale Holman and Fred McGaha.
Eddie Holman still holds the SLC record for career strikeouts with 336.
Drafted by the Cleveland Indians in 1980, Jeffcoat pitched for four teams during an 11-year Major League career. He is now the head baseball coach at Texas Wesleyan.
McGilberry and Norwood were named as the SLC's Pitcher of the Year in 1975 and 1973, respectively.

McAlister was named the league's Hitter of the Year in 1975, while receiving All-Conference acclaim in 1974 and 1975.
Willingham garnered All-SLC honors in 1974 and 1976.
    Lacy was a three-time All-SLC shortstop (1973-75).
Dale Holman, a Ouachita product, was a three-time All-Conference pick and the 1978 and 1979 Hitter of the Year.
McGaha was Hitter of the Year on the 1972 All-SLC squad.
Tech's Pat “Gravy” Patterson and Lamar's Jim Gilligan share Coach of the Decade honors.
Patterson piloted the Bulldogs to conference championships in 1974, 1975 and 1978 and his '74 team finished one victory shy of advancing to the College World Series. His teams compiled a 252-142 (.640 winning percentage) overall record and an 80-48 (.625) mark in conference play during the '70s. Patterson’s teams produced 20 first-team All-Conference selections during the decade.
Gilligan directed the Cardinals to four conference championships (1975, ’76, ’77 and ’79).
