  • Rueben Randle's first football camp at Bastrop High was a resounding success, attracting over 250 youths ages 8-18. Campers came from as far away as Baton Rouge, Texas and Arkansas to attend the free clinic.
Randle, who is entering his second season as a wide receiver for the New York Giants, was pleased with the way Saturday's five-hour camp turned out.
“I appreciate everybody coming out,” Randle said. “I thought we had a great turnout for something we only started working on a couple of weeks ago. I appreciate all of the radio stations, TV stations and newspapers for getting the word out.”
Dallas Cowboys' cornerback Morris Claiborne, Randle's former LSU teammate, and former Seattle Seahawks' cornerback DeMichael Dizer were among the camp instructors.
Returning the favor, Randle will assist with Claiborne's camp on Saturday in Shreveport.
Randle says he plans to conduct another camp at Bastrop High next summer.
“I'm looking forward to building it up for next year,” Randle said.
Campers of all ages went through a series of drills during the morning session. Randle and Claiborne presented the younger campers with autographed certificates.
Following the noon break, the high school-aged campers returned for line drills and a passing session.
Randle, the Giants' second-round selection in the 2012 NFL draft, caught 19 passes for 298 yards and three touchdowns during his rookie season.
At Bastrop High, he helped the Rams to three straight Class 4A state titles and earned Parade All-America honors as a senior in 2008.
