  • Nearly 20 towns throughout central Louisiana were represented Thursday at the Louisiana Municipal Association District D meeting, hosted by the town of Hornbeck at the Super 8 Hotel in Leesville.
The district meeting brought together many of the LMA officers, including president Hilda Curry, as well as local mayors and city council representatives from throughout District D, which includes Beauregard, Natchitoches, Red River, Sabine and Vernon parishes.
"Within the LMA, there are 303 mayors and nearly 1,500 councilmen," said Vern Breland, mayor of Sterlington and LMA First Vice President. "There's no reason we can't let our representatives and senators know the issues we're having."
Members also discussed recent legislation passed in the 2013 state legislative session, some of which the LMA supported and some of which they proposed. Rep. Frankie Howard (R-Many), who was also in attendance, said he was pleased with this year's session.
"I think the legislation that went through is going to be good for us," he said.
Thursday's meeting was one of a series of meetings throughout the state, in preparation for the annual LMA convention in Monroe, which begins Aug. 1.
Communities represented include Anacoco, Coushatta, DeRidder, Fisher, Gretna, Hornbeck, Leesville, Many, Natchitoches, New Iberia, New Llano, Pleasant Hill, Rosepine, Spring Hill, Sterlington and Zwolle. Also attending were Vernon Parish Sheriff Sam Craft, Mike Reese of Fort Polk Progress, Brig. Gen. William B. Hickman, Commanding General of the Joint Readiness Training Center and Fort Polk, as well as representatives for local politicians and the Secretary of State office.
