  • West Calcasieu's airport has a new name. Southland Field is now officially Southland Executive Airport. On Tuesday night, Southland's managing board agreed to the changeover in a specially-held meeting.
The new name was a suggestion made to the West Calcasieu Airport Managing Board in May by airport manager Michael McDougall.
"Your name really says a lot about you. For people who have never been to the airport before, when they hear Southland Executive Airport, their expectations of us will be a bit higher as opposed to Southland Field," said McDougall.
"With this change, we can really bring out the best that this airport has to offer," he added, "Southland Executive Airport is going to open up a lot of people's eyes. It will really market well to corporate traffic."
The airport is owned jointly by the City of Sulphur and the West Calcasieu Port, and is located south of Sulphur's city limits. Before Tuesday's vote, there were questions about whether the name change could simply be complete with just the board's approval. McDougall was able to alleviate that concern.
"I did ask the state about this, and they said it is solely up to the board. It is completely the board's decision," he said.
The new name is among many changes made at the airport since McDougall came onboard earlier this year.
"We have made lots of strives and improvements. We have come a long way since January, when I took over," he said.
According to McDougall, the improvements have included cleaning up the airport's appearance; getting needed equipment; building better relationships with the state, the Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration; and hiring a fourth lineman part-time,thereby satisfying their labor needs and helping the airport to become more efficient and effective.
"As of the end of June, we will be 100 percent functional. We will have everything we need to be a full service FBO [fixed-base operator]," said McDougall.
The name change comes just before the airport's 25th anniversary celebration. The board is still working out the details for the celebration, which has a tentative date of July 27.
"The bottom line is that we are a new Southland," said McDougall
