Top-seeded North Carolina slipped past South Carolina 5-4 Tuesday afternoon to complete the eight-team College World Series field.
North Carolina's victory over the Gamecocks in Game 3 of a weather-plagued series left LSU and Mississippi State as the Southeastern Conference's only two representatives to qualify for Omaha. North Carolina won the series opener 6-5, with the Gamecocks taking the middle game 8-0.
Tuesday's loss ended a string of three straight World Series appearances for South Carolina, which captured back-to-back national titles in 2010 and 2011 and finished as the CWS runner-up to Arizona last season.
Saturday's Bracket 1 matchups have Mississippi State (48-18) taking on Oregon State (50-11) at 2 p.m. and Indiana (48-18) facing Louisville (51-12) at 7.
Sunday's Bracket 2 pairings include North Carolina (57-10) vs. North Carolina State (49-14) at 2 p.m. and UCLA (44-17) vs. LSU (57-9) at 7 p.m. on ESPN2.
The two bracket champions advance to a best-of-three series, which is scheduled to start Monday, to determine the national title.
In other news involving LSU, shortstop Alex Bregman was chosen as the Freshman Hitter of the Year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association on Tuesday. Cal State Fullerton's Thomas Eshelman is the Pitcher of the Year.
Bregman carries a .380 batting average into the CWS and holds the LSU school record for hits by a freshman (104). He is six hits away from tying the program's all-time mark for hits in a season.
