  • Funeral services held for longtime basketball coach Butch Smart

  • Funeral services for Butch Smart, who started his 44-year coaching career as an assistant at Bastrop High in 1968, were held Friday in Ruston.
    Smart, 69, passed away Wednesday morning following a lengthy bout with cancer.
    As a head coach, Smart directed his teams to 709 career victories.
    Smart held head coaching positions at Dubach, Cedar Creek, Quitman and East Ascension, before finishing out his career at Highlands (N.C.) High. During Smart's 16-year tenure (1996-2012) at Highlands, his teama qualified for the state playoffs every season and won three conference championships.
    Smart got his start in the coaching profession at Bastrop High when he was hired by Hall of Fame coach Leon Barmore.
    FRANK SCELFO, who began his coaching career at Prairie View, recently accepted his first NFL job with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
    Gus Bradley, the Jags' first-year head coach, hired Scelfo as quarterbacks coach.
    Scelfo, a former ULM baseball player, was Prairie View's head football and baseball coach from 1982-83. After several high school stops in Louisiana and Texas, Scelfo spent 11 seasons at Tulane, including the final eight as offensive coordinator. He was offensive coordinator at Louisiana Tech from 2007-09 and quarterbacks coach at Arizona from 2010-11.
    CARPENTER MEMORIAL: The annual W.T. “Bill” Carpenter Memorial individual golf tournament will be played at the Morehouse Country Club next Saturday and Sunday.
    Dale Cagnolatti edged out Chase Bostick on the second hole to win last year's event.

    BHS SUMMER WORKOUTS: Bastrop High football players are to report for summer workouts, starting Monday, June 3.
    Workouts will be conducted each Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Starting time for incoming freshmen is 9:30 a.m., with the varsity gathering from 6-8 p.m.

    SUMMER BASEBALL: Bastrop will open its season in the area high school summer league with four games in three days next week in the West Ouachita Tournament. Bastrop's game times are 3:30 p.m. Thursday, 3:30 and 8 p.m. Friday and 12:30 Saturday.
    Anyone planning on playing baseball at Bastrop High next season should report to the fieldhouse for summer lifting. Workouts begin at 8 a.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. The team will not work out this coming Monday due to Memorial Day.
