"It is not how these officers died that made them heroes, it is how they lived." —Vivian Eney Cross, Survivor
May 12 through 18 is known as National Police Week. This is a time set aside to honor officers who died while protecting others.
The Bastrop Police Dept. has participated in actives during this special week for several years and will continue that tradition with a wreath laying ceremony at 2 p.m. May 15. This token of appreciation will be held at the Fallen Police Officer's Memorial in the plaza of Bastrop City Hall.
Baton Rouge Police Lt. Mavis Johnson will sing the law enforcement rendition of Amazing Grace at the ceremony, which is open to the public.
One hundred and twenty officers died in 2012 and to date in 2013, 41 officers have lost their lives.
