  • Prairie View spent its two weeks of spring football practice emphasizing the basics.
Focusing on line play and the skill positions on alternate days, the camp was heavy on teaching.
“We worked on fundamentals,” said Prairie View coach Reagan Morrison, whose team broke camp Thursday. “By working with the linemen one day and backs and receivers the next, we were able to get more individual time with everybody.”
Morrison and his staff kept things simple, with the backs and receivers working on handoffs and routes and the linemen addressing stances, starts and hand placement.
Another focal point of the camp was conditioning. Rather than donning pads, the Spartans did a considerable amount of running.
“We did a lot of conditioning,” Morrison said. “We had cooler temperatures this spring, but we're trying to get them ready for those 105-degree days.”
After taking a couple of weeks off, the Spartans will begin summer workouts on June 3.
“I'm pleased with the way everybody has been working in the weight room,” Morrison said. “I'm pleased with our offseason to this point.”
Though limited, qauarterback Dylan Carroll, who is returning from major knee surgery, was able to join the Spartans for spring practice.
“Dylan was cleared to do some light jogging,” Morrison said. “We didn't roll him out or anything, but he's able to throw. He goes back to the doctor next month, so we'll know a little more then.”
Morrison says the 6-2 Carroll, who reported at 160 pounds last season, has added 20 pounds of muscle since being injured against eventual Class 1A state champion Tri-County (Miss.).
“Dylan's bulked up,” Morrison said. “He has really worked hard in the weight room.”
Other Spartans making considerable progress during the spring were wide receiver/defensive back Maclendon Sharp, linebacker/defensive backs Hunter Carpenter and Hunter Green and linemen Clay Moore, Ty Barnhill and Nathan Tarver.
