Class 4A Boys State Track & Field Meet
Demarcus Haynes made the medal stand by placing third in the 3200-meter run at the Class 4A State Track & Field Meet, held Saturday at Bernie Moore Stadium on the LSU campus.
Haynes, a senior and Bastrop's only representative in the boys' meet, was timed at 10:12.74. Drake Heinz of Benton posted the winning time of 10:02.49, while Shreveport Northwood's Dylan Oliver was runner-up at 10:04.77.
Oliver, Heinz and Haynes finished 1-2-3 in the Region I-4A Meet at Benton High School on Wednesday, April 24, but Heinz was able to reverse the order Saturday.
Heinz was also awarded eight points for finishing second to Shaw's Kyle Soulant in the 1600m. Soulant was clocked at 4:31.67, while Heinz checked in at 4:35.19.
In a meet which saw no double winners in the individual events, state champion Edna Karr claimed the team trophy with 64 points. Huntington was a distant second with 37 points.
Among District 2-4A schools, Wossman tied for eighth with 26 points, while West Ouachita tallied eight.
Karr's winning relay teams included Jermey Hicks, Edward Davis, Renel Holmes and Sharkieth Beverly in the 4 x 200m (1:25.95) and Christian Gilbert, Desmond Holmes, Davis and Kaylon Beverly in the 4 x 400m (3:22.12).
Sharkieth Beverly and Hicks were 1-2 in the 100m dash with times of 10.65 and 10.67. Hicks claimed the 200m at 21.53.
St. Augustine won two running events as Felix Farinas captured the 110m hurdles (14.88) and anchored the winning 4 x 100m relay team (42.38), following Dejan Murray, Graegg Holmes and Leonard Fournette.
After finishing second to Farinas in the 110m hurdles, John-Cody Krener of St. Thomas More won the 300m hurdles with a time of 39.53. Farinas was next at 39.91.
Blair Henderson of St. Louis won the 800m with a readout of 1:53.25, while Ellender's Brian Verdin claimed the 400m (49.79).
Winners in the field events were Kevin Flattmann of Benton in the javelin (180-11); Aaron Craig of Salmen in the high jump (6-6); Eldridge Washington of Helen Cox in the shot put (51-4.75); Chance Chambers of Huntington in the long jump (24-2.75); Robert Kennedy of Belle Chasse in the discus (167-1); Da'quan Bellard of Opelousas in the triple jump (45-11.50); and Patrick Washington of Vandebilt Catholic in the pole vault (15-0).
Deedrick Bethley produced a pair of third-place finishes to highlight Wossman's performance. Bethley was clocked at 10.81 in the 100m and 21.97 in the 200m.
Bethley also ran the lead leg for the Wildcats' third-place 4 x 100m relay team, which was timed at 42.68. Following Bethley were Ladacious Franklin, Jacques Brooks and Justin Hubbard.
Jalen Pikes added another third-place finish for Wossman with a time of 2:00.48 in the 800m.
Hunter Deville gave West Ouachita its best finish by placing fourth in the discus (140-7).
Josh Huddleston was sixth in the pole vault (11-0), while Andre' Johnson and Terrell Russell were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 400m with times of 50.93 and 51.04.
