  • Just as every Louisiana high school football player wants to end his season in the Superdome, LSU's Bernie Moore Stadium is the dream destination for the state's track athletes.
Bastrop High will be represented at Saturday's Class 4A State Track & Field Meet by 12 athletes, including 11 in the girls division.
Bastrop's Michelle Hardin is the pre-meet favorite in the shot put after winning last week's Region I Meet at Benton with a heave of 37-09.25. Hardin established a personal record in the District 2-4A Meet with a toss of 40-09.25.
Hardin was the state runner-up last year as her throw of 37-03.50 measured just 2.50 inches behind Cecilia's Monique Blanchard.
A Baton Rouge Community College basketball signee, Hardin is expected to be challenged by Rhea Thompson of St. Louis, Tiffany Soto of East Jefferson and Dalisha Lawrence of St. Louis. Thompson won her Regional Meet with a throw of 36-08.00, while Soto and Lawrence produced distances of 35-02.75 and 35-02.50, respectively.
Freshman Rodeisha Heard is the only other Lady Ram to qualify in the field. She is seeded eighth in the triple jump (32-02.50) and ninth in the long jump (15-01.75).
Desiree McHenry finished as the state runner-up in the 200-meter dash last season with a 24.84 readout, nearly a full second behind Marcquita Stalbert of 2012 state champion McDonogh #35.
McHenry has qualified in the 200m, once again, despite battling a series of nagging injuries and illnesses throughout her junior season. She is seeded eighth with a Regional time of 25.83, while teammate Stataisja Johnson (25.84) is the No. 9 seed.
Bastrop qualified in all three relay races.
Heard, Khadejia Tyler, Jessica Gray and Sharay Hyde are seeded second in the 4 x 400m relay, with McHenry and Jakiya Jones listed as alternates.
St. Louis is heavily favored as the foursome of Shondalynn Jasmine, Drew Chatters, Hannah Jackson and Brianna Soram was clocked at 4:00.08 at Regional.
Bastrop's 4 x 100m relay unit of Destini Davis, Johnson, Gray and McHenry, plus alternates Tierra Brooks and Tyler is the No. 7 seed (49.61).
In the 4 x 200m, the Lady Rams are ranked No. 8 with a time of 1:47.47. Davis, Gray, McHenry and Johnson are slated to carry the baton, with Heard and Brooks as alternates.
Dineshia Chatman is the No. 9 seed in the 800m at 2:35.60.
Senior Demarcus Haynes is Bastrop's lone delegate in the boys meet. Coming off of a personal best time of 10:24.20, Haynes is the No. 5 seed.
