The pomp and circumstance of the Change of Command Ceremony for the JROTC program at Bastrop High School was witnessed Friday morning as Cadet Lt. Col. Rachael Lara relinquished command of her battalion, handing it over in true military style to Cadet Lt. Col. Devondria Jones.
The inaugural ceremony was was held at the BHS Ram Stadium to recognize the contributions of this year's Cadets and to transfer cadet responsibility to a new group of students.
Under the leadership of Col. (Retired) Stephen Jeselink, Sgt. First Class (Retired) Fred Harrison and Sgt. First Class (Retired) Tina May, the JROTC program was present at every home football game and participated in numerous events outside of school such as parades. They also had a leading role in this year's Relay for Life event.
Lara, along with her Senior Non-Commissioned Officer Cadet Command Sgt. Major Jamal Hill, led the JROTC to place first in unarmed exhibition drill, third in unarmed regulation drill, third in armed regulation drill and fourth in overall inspection of cadets at a competition in Little Rock, Ark. in May. They competed against 15 other JROTC programs from Arkansas.
The battalion-sized organization is comprised of approximately 160 cadets, with four companies having two platoons each.
