Sterlington will be well-represented in the pole vault at the Class 2A State Track & Field Meet on Thursday, May 2 at Bernie Moore Stadium on the LSU campus.
Matt Allred and Drew George finished second, and third, respectively for the Panthers. First-place Axec Davis of North Webster, Allred and George all cleared 10-6, with the order of finish determined by the number of attempts.
Scoring in all three relays races, the Panthers scored 23 points to place ninth out of 23 teams.
“We had a good day,” Sterlington coach David Janssen said. “Of the 23 teams that were at that meet, I’ll take ninth place all day.”
Derek Price, Jaylon Wade, QuenTerrius Gray and Logan Cain were fourth in the 4 x 100-meter relay (44.12), just .08 seconds behind third-place Jonesboro-Hodge. The same foursome was sixth in the 4 x 200m (1:34.47).
Price, Brandon O'Clair, Josh Guerin and Cain added a sixth-place point in the 4 x 400m relay at 3:42.33.
Sterlington also received sixth-place finishes from John Colaluca in the javelin (126-11), Brandon O'Clair in the 800m (2:16.79) and Quinn Glaze in the 1600m run (5:10.05).
District 2-2A champion Lakeside produced a pair of double winners en route to claiming the team trophy.
Defending state champion and McNeese State University signee Enrique Soto looked invincible en route to sweeping the distances with readouts of 4:30.62 in the 1600m and 9:55.86 in the 3200.
Chris Lewis ruled the short bursts, capturing the 100m (10.76) and the 200m (21.88).
Orlando Williams of Jonesboro-Hodge gave District 2-2A its only first-place finish in the field events by clearing the bar at 6-02 in the high jump.
Note: Cason Handy's name was inadvertently omitted from the list of Sterlington's Regional qualifiers in last week's issue of the North Ouachita Weekly News. Handy finished third in the 300-meter hurdles at the District 2-2A Meet.
