Sterlington will open the Class 2A state baseball playoffs against the Doyle Tigers on Friday at 5 p.m. at Panther Park.
Doyle (15-14, 7-5), the No. 20 seed, finished in a three-way tie for second place in District 8-2A with Springfield and St. Thomas Aquinas. Northlake Christian won the league championship with a perfect 12-0 mark.
District 2-2A champion Sterlington (23-9, 8-1), the No. 20 seed, has won 13 of its last 14 games heading into the playoffs.
Friday's victor  advances to play the winner between No. 29 DeQuincy and No. 4 University Lab next week.
In other news regarding the Panthers, coach Randy Carr said Tuesday that righthanded pitcher Casey Sutton plans to sign with Hinds (Miss.) County Community College on Friday morning.
