Chyenne Mayo produced his second straight three-hit game and Maclendon Sharp struck out the side to kill a Riverdale rally in the bottom of the sixth as Prairie View clinched a playoff spot with a 6-3 road victory Friday afternoon.
Prairie View (13-7, 6-3), the second place team from MAIS District 3-2A, will open a best-of-three series at home against Marshall on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Games 2 and 3 (if necessary) will be played in Holly Springs, Miss.
Trailing 4-2, the Rebels put the go-ahead run on base with a walk and two errors to start the sixth. Summoned to the mound, Sharp struck out the side to minimize the damage and protect a 4-3 lead.
Prairie View opened up some breathing room with a deuce in the seventh.
Three Prairie View pitchers combined for a two-hitter while pitching around six errors. Tristen Shanks worked a 1-2-3 first with two strikeouts, but was removed from the mound with a sore arm. Brandon Jacobs logged four innings to gain the win, allowing three runs (all unearned) on two hits. Sharp fanned three in two innings to register the save.
Mayo, who is 6-for-8 in the last two games, led the Spartans' seven-single attack with three hits. Sharp went 2-for-4 and Josh Daigle and Levi Humphrey added base hits. Andrew Jenkins drove in two runs.
