  • Setting a personal record in the 1600-meter run, Demarcus Haynes produced a pair of second-place finishes in the distance races for the Bastrop Rams in the Oil City Relays on Friday afternoon at El Dorado High School.
Haynes was clocked at 4:50 in the 1600m, eclipsing his previous best by seven seconds. Bastrop coach
Sedarrin Freeman said Haynes began his celebration a little too soon in the 3200m.
“Haynes had a chance to win the two-mile, but he got a little beside himself and got beat at the end,”
Bastrop coach Sedarrin Freeman said, “but that will be a learning experience for him. All in all, Haynes had a good day, though.”
Bastrop claimed second place in two relay races. Jaeterious Davis, Jamari Payne, Orlando Walker and Mark Harden ran the 4 x 100m, with Carlnealius White, Harden, Ch'kilas Calhoun and Quartavis Johnson taking care of the 4 x 400m.
“We're still ironing out the wrinkles,” Freeman said. “Hopefully, we'll be peaking by the time we get to District and Regional. We could use a little more speed, but who knows what can happen in a relay race? We're getting there.”
Calhoun and Johnson finished third and fifth, respectively, in the 400m dash.
Throwing in his first meet, Johnnie Marsaw provided a point with a seventh-place finish in the shot put.
In their final pre-district tuneup, the Rams will compete in Thursday's Ouachita Relays. Field events get under way at 3:30 p.m., with the running events starting at 4.
“We would love to have some support Thursday,” Freeman said. “We've been having some support, but we would love to see some more.”
