The Monroe Magicians fledgling semipro basketball team will conduct a tryout camp on Saturday, April 20.
Tryouts for the Monroe Magicians' semipro basketball team will be held at Benoit Recreation Center on Saturday, April 20, starting at 9 a.m. A $100 tryout fee is due at registration.
Players are required to furnish their own workout gear. For additional information on the tryout, contact Grant Worsley at at email@example.com.
A first-year semipro team competing in the American Basketball Association, the Magicians will play the majority of their home games at the Benoit and Saul Adler recreation facilities. Team owner Grant Worsley said Wednesday afternoon that he is in negotiations with the City of Monroe to play selected home games at the Monroe Civic Center. The ABA season tips off in October.
Worsley, who also owns the ABA's Jackson Showboats, says the ABA has approximately 70 teams throughout the United States. To reduce travel, the league is structured regionally. Other ABA franchises in the region include New Orleans, Pine Bluff, Little Rock and Texarkana, Texas.
For ABA players, the league offers the opportunity to move up the ladder. Last year, 10 ABA alums signed contracts with the NBA D-League or to play overseas.
“If you're good enough, you have the opportunity to get to a higher league,” Worsley said. “Select players have gone on to play in the NBA D-League and overseas.”
Worsley was awarded a second ABA team following a successful 2012-13 season in Jackson.
“We have learned so much with the ABA business model and know that we can duplicate our Jackson success in Monroe, which is a great city,” Worsley said. “We are very excited about getting started.”
