  • Bastrop High's track and field teams will return to action Friday in the El Dorado (Ark.) Relays. Field events get under way at 3:30 p.m. Originally scheduled for Thursday, the event has been pushed back a day due to rain.
Bastrop competed in the Eagle Relays at Tatum (Texas) High School — coach Sedarrin Freeman's alma mater — on Saturday, March 23, prior to taking a week off.
Although the event was shortened by rain, Freeman said the Texas trip was a good experience for the Rams and Lady Rams.
“Texas is known for great track,” Freeman said. “It was good for the kids to get to see some good competition and some good technique. We probably won't see a whole lot of competition like that until we get to state. The kids understand that they have to work hard these last two weeks before getting into district, regional and state.”
Michelle Hardin won the shot put for the Lady Rams' lone first-place finish in Texas.
Desiree McHenry was strong in the sprints, placing second in the 100-meter dash and third in the 200m.
McHenry also carried the baton along with Destini Davis, Stataija Johnson and Jessica Gray for the Lady Rams' sixth-place 4 x 100m relay team.
“Placing sixth in the 4 x 1 was good for that meet,” Freeman said.
On the boys side, Demarcus Haynes' fourth-place finish in the 3200m was a bright spot.
“A lot of events were called off because of the weather over there,” Freeman said. “We didn't get a chance to run the mile relay, which is kind of a strong point for us.”
After Friday's meet in El Dorado, Bastrop closes out the regular season at Ouachita on Thursday, April 11. The District 2-4A Meet is scheduled for Wednesday, April 17 at West Ouachita, followed by Regional on April 24 at Benton and State on Saturday, May 4 at LSU.
“We still have some growing to do,” Freeman said. “Hopefully, we'll peak at the right time.”
