Today is the deadline to register to vote in the May 4, 2013 election. On the ballot is a millage request from the Morehouse Parish School Board. The special tax of nine mills will be on properties in the entirety of Morehouse Parish with the exceptions of Ward 2, which is the Beekman School District and the East Morehouse School District, which consists of Collinston, Mer Rouge and Bonita.
The taxation will be on all properties which are subject to taxation and run for a period of 10 years beginning in 2013. The monies collected will be used for constructing, improving, maintaining and operating public schools in Morehouse School District 2012-1, including salaries and benefits for teachers and employees.
Morehouse Parish Registrar of Voters Sandra Thomas said this upcoming election will also be the first under ACT 577, which changes the hours of operation for the registrar's office as well as polling hours.
RS:18-134 E.1 changes the registrar's office hours to 7 a.m. until 9 p.m. on local elections. The hours of 6 a.m. until 9 p.m. stay the same for any regularly scheduled congressional primary elections.
Also in primary and general elections, the polls will be open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. (RS 18:541A)
Thomas said that if there is a run-off for the position of mayor or alderman, this too will be on the ballot May 4.
