  • Morehouse Parish 4-H agent Lauren Edwards hosted the meeting and Northeast Regional 4-H coordinator Terri Crawford was the key speaker, while Extension Agent Terry Erwin gave the introductions. The diversity of those present, ranged from Sheriff Mike Tubbs to Prairie View Academy junior Clay Moore. Moore was able to give input from a student's perspective.
Crawford said the purpose for the meeting was to obtain input from the community on how to promote and raise awareness for 4-H programs. She and Edwards both made several pauses during the meeting to ask for comments from those in attendance.
"The guidance provided by those in attendance is essential as we work to improve the quality of 4-H in this parish," Edwards said. "This meeting was successful in identifying key issues facing our youth."
Members of the committee discussed the different programs offered by 4-H that give the youth the ability to learn things they need in life, such as cooking and sewing. It highlighted other areas of 4-H such shooting sports and livestock shows, as well.
The committee also discussed ways they could get the word out to schools about all the programs offered by 4-H. LSU Ag Center Extension Agent Terry Erwin said that some schools allow 4-H in with open arms while other weren't so susceptible.
"We need good 4-H leaders in all the schools and we need incentives that will bring better leaders," Erwin said.
When the meeting ended, Edwards thanked everyone for attending.
"These meetings provide direction as we look toward increasing enrollment and participation in the 4-H youth development program," she said. "Together we can bring up 4-H membership and get kids active again in doing positive activities."
