For Prairie View, the baseball playoffs have started early.
Needing to win out in MAIS District 3-2A play, the Spartans host first-place Central Hinds on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. A junior varsity game will precede the varsity contest at 4:30.
Prairie View will send junior lefthander Maclendon Sharp to the mound against the Cougars, who won the first two games of the series 2-1 in Bastrop on March 5 and 6-5 in Raymond two days later.
"This is a big game for us," Prairie View coach Dan Smart said. "All of them are big from here on out."
Smart said he expects the field to be playable Tuesday in spite of a torrential downpour on Easter Sunday.
River Oaks shutout the Spartans behind Zach Barnes on Tuesday, March 26, putting the Spartans in must-win mode.
Sophomore righthander Tristen Shanks unfurled a two-hitter as the Spartans stopped River Oaks 4-1 on Thursday in Monroe. Shanks struck out 13 in the clutch performance.
"Tristen came through for us and pitched real well," Smart said.
Senior third baseman Austin McDonald leads the Spartans offensively with a .433 batting average, followed closely by Sharp at .429 and junior second baseman Chyenne Mayo at .366.
Tuesday's game is the start of a four-game week for the Spartans.
Junior lefty Matt Reed is scheduled to pitch when the Spartans entertain Claiborne Academy in non-district play on Thursday in a JV/varsity double header, starting at 4 p.m.
Shanks will take the bump in Friday's 3 p.m. district tilt at Riverdale.
Prairie View's JV/varsity non-conference double header against Glenbrook has been rescheduled from Saturday, March 30 to this coming Saturday. Starting time for the JV game at 3 p.m. at Spartan Field, with the varsity getting under way at 5.
