Standing at a surprising No. 11 in the LHSAA power rankings, the Bastrop Lady Rams have a busy week ahead with five games over the next seven days.
Bastrop (10-7, 3-2) visits Farmerville on Tuesday, returns home to play Neville on Wednesday at 5 p.m. and travels to West Ouachita on Thursday. After a day off Friday, the Lady Rams close out District 2-4A play at home vs. Franklin Parish on Saturday at 5 p.m., before finishing out the regular season with a 5 p.m. home game vs. Rayville.
Naturally, the schedule is subject to change due to inclement weather. Wednesday's forecast calls for an 80 percent chance of rain, which could force the Neville game to be rescheduled for a second time.
Bastrop brings a three-game winning streak into the Farmerville contest, including a 5-2 home field victory over the Farmers on Monday, March 18.
In their most recent outing, the Lady Rams defeated Franklin Parish 9-7 in Winnsboro behind Sarah Fagan's grand slam home run.
Bastrop, which did not qualify for the playoffs last year, has the opportunity to host a first round playoff game by finishing in the top 16.
"It would be nice to have a home game instead of having to drive five hours as an 18 or 19 seed," Bastrop coach Todd Briley said.
Even Briley seems a little surprised by the Lady Rams' high power ranking.
"Some of the teams we've lost to (in non-district) — Oak Grove, Cedar Creek and Mangham — have won a lot of games, so that's helping us out," Briley said.
Without a senior on the roster, the Lady Rams have won despite struggling defensively.
"We're winning some games, but we're still making six, seven or eight errors a game," Briley said. "We are hitting the ball a lot better. We show up against some teams and play well. Other days, we don't play so well."
Bastrop trails two district foes in the power rankings, as West Ouachita checks in at No. 3 and Neville at No. 3. Neville (14-7, 4-0) stands atop the district standings, having downed the Lady Chiefs 5-1 in Cadeville on March 14. West Ouachita visits Neville today at 5.
