  • Sterlington High baseball coach Randy Carr will undergo shoulder surgery Thursday.
Carr's shoulder has been bothering him for awhile, but the pain grew significantly worse over the past couple of weeks. When results from an MRI revealed significant damage earlier this week, Carr was advised to undergo surgery.
"It was one of those situations where it was a lot worse than he expected," Sterlington athletic director Jason Thompson said.
No time table has been set for Carr's return.
On the bright side, the Panthers have two highly-qualified assistants in hitting coach Bucky Chandler and pitching coach Mark Sims. Chandler has headed up the Panthers' summer team the past couple of seasons, while Sims is a former head coach at Class 5A West Monroe.
"Chandler and Mark are both baseball guys," Thompson said. "They've been through the wars for a lot of years. I know the kids will respond well to them. Bucky and Mark work well together and they have my full confidence."
Sterlington's on-field coaching duties will remain the same during Carr's leave as he manages from the bench. Sims and Chandler will continue to coach first and third base, respectively.
In the first game of Carr's absence, Sterlington defeated Claiborne Christian in a 20-10 slugfest Tuesday night.
"We're just going to try to get through spring break and see how coach Carr is doing," Chandler said.
Sterlington High will be closed next week for spring break, but the baseball team has a busy week in store.
The Panthers open District 2-2A play at Lakeside on Thursday at 6 p.m., followed by a five-game homestand against Oak Grove on Saturday (11 a.m. JV, 1 p.m. varsity), Homer on Tuesday (4 p.m., varsity), Jonesboro-Hodge on Thursday (4 p.m. JV, 6 p.m. varsity), Caldwell on Saturday, March 30 (11 a.m. JV, 1 p.m. varsity) and Lakeside on Tuesday, April 2 (6 p.m., varsity).
