Senior lefthander Matt Reeves threw a three-hit shutout and went 4-for-4 with two RBI from the leadoff slot as Neville rolled to an 18-0 victory over Bastrop in the District 2-4A opener for both teams Thursday night at Baron Ballpark.
Neville went up 1-0 in the top of the first when Reeves singled, stole second and took third on Thomas Green's sacrifice bunt and crossed the plate on Michael Green's sac fly.
Reeves' sac fly chased home Daniel Eskew who banged a leadoff double and moved to third on an error, doubling the Tigers' lead to 2-0 in the second.
Neville picked four runs on five hits in the third and stretched its lead to 8-0 on Thomas Nickelson's solo home run over the right field wall in the fourth.
Things got out of hand in the fifth as the Tigers put up 10 runs on eight hits, two walks and error. Thomas Green's three-run double highlighted the big inning, giving the junior third baseman five RBI for the game.
Allowing only one runner past first base, Reeves struck out eight, walked two and surrendered three hits — all singles — to Cade Cantrell, Chase Cockrell and Morgan Edmonds.
Reeves headed the Tigers' 16-hit onslaught with a double and three singles, Nickelson bashed a homer, double and single, Eskew connected for a pair of two-baggers, Thomas Green doubled and singled, McKinzie Hastings supplied two singles and Michael Green and Hunter Stone singled.
Regrouping from a 2-7 start, the Tigers improved to 7-10. Bastrop, which had its four-game winning streak snapped, fell to 6-8.
The two teams wrap up the three-game series with a 1 p.m. double header at Embanato Field in Monroe on Saturday.
