This Girl is on fire! After a season and a half of will-they-or-won't-they tension, New Girl's quirky roommates Jess (Zooey Deschanel) and Nick (Jake Johnson) left fans breathless when they finally locked lips on the Jan. 29 episode. And their blossoming relationship will take another big step forward this week. The costars tease about what the future holds for these friends with benefits.
TV Guide Magazine: Let's discuss the kiss, because viewers were pretty surprised by how passionate it was.Zooey Deschanel: When you have characters who've had this sexual tension for this long, it has to be a freakin' hot kiss, and you have to surprise them.Jake Johnson: There wasn't a lot of conversation between us about it. What was nice about that moment was, Zooey really knows her character, I know my character, and we were excited we were finally doing more than making eye contact.
TV Guide Magazine: Will we see any more kissing soon?Deschanel: I'm going to say probably.Johnson: Unless they did weird s--t in editing. [Laughs]Deschanel: Exactly! I'm going to guarantee it - unless they decided to cut it out!Johnson: People who watch our show for the Nick/Jess stuff will not be disappointed in how this season continues to progress.
TV Guide Magazine: So does that mean they're going to explore an actual relationship?Deschanel: Well, Jess wants to sleep with Nick [in tonight's episode].Johnson: But she's not sober when she says it!Deschanel: She gets hit in the face and she's on pain pills. She tells Nick that she wants to sleep with him and then the next day doesn't remember anything.Johnson: It throws Nick off, though, because she was being very real about it.
TV Guide Magazine: Did the show's writers always plan to get them together?Deschanel: No, but it became really clear that we had good chemistry.Johnson: In the original pilot, the tag was supposed to be, Nick and Jess are sitting next to each other and Nick goes in to kiss her. And she's not expecting it and they bump noses.Deschanel: Oh, that's right! I totally forgot about that!Johnson: Me too, until just now. And [creator] Liz [Meriwether] was on set and said no, because this show is not about Nick and Jess.
TV Guide Magazine: But now it's impossible to think of New Girl without immediately thinking of Nick and Jess.Deschanel: If I look back on my career, New Girl is obviously a major thing, and their relationship is at the heart of my own storyline.
TV Guide Magazine: Do you think the two of them are mature enough to carry out a fully functioning relationship?Deschanel: These two are so on the cliff's edge of just f---ing it up. [Laughs]Johnson: I personally think there's a whole world of stories in trying, failing, trying again and falling in love, whenever that happens. And I think it will be fun to watch Nick and Jess go through it.
TV Guide Magazine: How will all of this start to affect the other roommates?Deschanel: Schmidt [Max Greenfield] and Winston [Lamorne Morris] start worrying that if Nick and Jess head in that direction, it's going to change the group's dynamic.
TV Guide Magazine: How do you feel about comparisons to past classic TV couples?Johnson: We've heard [Cheers'] Sam and Diane, [Friends'] Ross and Rachel, [The Office's] Jim and Pam - and it's a real honor, but Nick and Jess are not even a couple yet! [Laughs] All they've done is kiss once! I'm like, "What's gonna happen if they date for half a season?"
TV Guide Magazine: Is it true that there's some Nick/Jess fan fiction already circulating on the Internet?Deschanel: Oh, my God, yeah. One of our writers found some, but I haven't looked for it in a while. It was disgusting last year, so now it's got to be pornographic.Johnson: It's got to be disgusting. I mean, just the stuff I've been writing is disgusting. [Laughs]
