According to Education Curriculum Secretary Emma Brandon, parents are urged to register their children that that time in order to not be placed on a waiting list.
Children must be 4 years old by Sept. 30, 2013 to be registered for pre-k and 5 years old by Sept. 30, 2013 to be registered for kindergarten. Parents must bring the child's original birth certificate with a raised state seal, an original social security card and current health/shot records. They must also provide two proof of residence documents in the legal parent or guardian's name. These may include filed homestead exemption, home mortgage documents or property deeds, rental agreement for house or apartment, automobile registration, medicare or medicaid information, insurance policy for home or apartment, food stamp certification or a utility bill. Parents may only use one utility bill and it must be current within the last two months. Also, a certified copy of custody papers must be brought in for anyone other than the person listed on the birth certificate.
Driver's license or voter registration cards will not be accepted unless they were issued within the last two months.
If the child does not have a birth certificate, parents may go to the Clerk of Court's office, located in the Morehouse Parish Court house to request a copy. For a social security card, go to the Social Security office located at 300 Holt Street and for a health/shot record, go to the Morehouse Parish Health Unit located at 650 School Road, or the child's pediatrician.
