Two-run home runs by Christian Harris and Trey Putney staked Southwood to a 5-0 first-inning lead en route to a 14-6 victory over Ouachita Christian on Saturday afternoon in the Sterlington-Bastrop Tournament.
In control from start to finish, the Cowboys opened up a 14-2 bulge after 5 ½ innings.
Codie Stewart went 3-for-3 with a triple and four RBI to lead the Cowboys (5-12) at the plate. Trey Vuelman went 3-for-3, Adam Perse was 2-for-4 and Harris and Putney went yard.
OCS (16-2), which had its eight-game winning streak snapped, actually out-hit the visitors 12-10. David Branch went 3-for-3 with a homer and two singles and Jordan Washam swatted a double and two singles in four at bats. Todd Pennebaker homered for the second straight game and singled and Braden Bristo, Cade Harper, Colby Webb and Quin Graves furnished base hits.
Vuelman worked five-plus innings for the win, with Perse finishing up. Zach Palowsky (2-1), the first of four OCS pitchers, took the loss for the Eagles.
After taking St. Patrick's Day off, the defending state champion Eagles dive into District 2-1A play, traveling to Cedar Creek on Monday and hosting St. Frederick on Tuesday. First pitch for both games is scheduled for 6 p.m.
