Southwood 5, Sterlington 4

Sterlington rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn't enough as Southwood held on for a 5-4 victory Thursday night at Panther Park.

On opening night of the Bastrop-Sterlington Tournament, Codie Stewart carried a two-hit shutout into the bottom of the seventh.

Stewart plunked Kyle Vandergracht and walked Kyle Dolecheck to start the Sterlington seventh. After a punchout, Casey Sutton singled and Trent Raffray, representing the tying run, reached on a misplayed fly ball.

One out later, Tyler Buffington was safe on an error and Austin Mills singled, closing the gap to 5-4 with the bases loaded, before Stewart escaped the jam to seal the victory.

Christian Harris' RBI double staked the Cowboys from Shreveport to a 1-0 lead in the fourth.

Stewart helped his own cause with a two-run single and later scored on a balk as Southwood upped its lead to 4-0 in the fifth.

Trey Putney led off the Southwood sixth with a double, moved to third on Nelson Hall's bunt single and scored what proved to be the decisive run on John Michael Barnett's sacrifice fly.

Hits were even at four apiece. Harris and Putney doubled and Stewart and Hall singled for the Cowboys. Sterlington received two singles from Casey Sutton and base bumps from Buffington and Mills.

Stewart went the distance for the win. Buffington was dealt the loss in relief of Allen Anders.
