Morgan Edmonds, Cade Cantrell and Kyle Perkins had two hits apiece as Bastrop was a 14-4 winner over Delhi Charter in the Bastrop-Sterlington Tournament on Thursday night at Baron Ballpark.
Oak Grove won the early game, 4-1, over Lakeside.
The tournament continues Friday with games at Baron, Sterlington, Ouachita Christian and St. Frederick.
Friday's schedule at Baron has Rayville vs. Cedar Creek at 4 p.m. and Southwood vs. Bastrop at 6:30. On Saturday, it's Farmerville vs. Oak Grove at 10 a.m., Oak Grove vs. Minden at 12:30 p.m. and Farmerville vs. Bastrop at 3.
In Thursday's late game, the visiting Gators jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead.
Austyn Davis led off the game with a base hit, Cole Stracener put down a bunt single and T.J. Ramshur reached on a one-out error.
Bastrop didn't trail for long, scoring three runs after starting the bottom of the first with two outs and the bases empty.
Chase Cockrell was hit by a pitch and Cade Cantrell scorched a double down the left field line. Dollar Ridgell then legged out an RBI infield single to get the Rams on the board. Two more runs crossed when Gavin Pollock pulled into second base following a fielding error.
Plating three more runs with two away, the Rams padded their lead to 6-3 with three more in the third.
Perkins singled to right with one down and Khalil Key hit into a force play for the second out. Jerry Powell walked and Ty Cantrell was grazed by a pitch to jam the sacks. Next up, Edmonds pushed a two-run single into center field. Ty Cantrell continued home when the throw from home plate sailed into center field as Edmonds slid into second base.
DC closed within 6-3 in the fourth.
Davis doubled to right with one down and completed the circuit when Will Zeigler motored all the way to third on a mishandled fly ball. Outfielders from both teams had problems finding the ball after sunset.
Bastrop tacked on two more in the home half of the fourth.
Cade Cantrell walked, moved to third on a pair of wild pitches and beat the throw to the plate on Ridgell's RBI groundout to second base.
With one out and the bases clear, Pollock walked. Courtesy runner Ska'Darryo Johnson scurried to third on an overthrown pickoff attempt and tallied on Perkins' base knock, upping the Rams' lead to 8-3.
John Kevin Greer and Colby Dulaney drew back-to-back one-out walks in the DC fifth, before Bastrop starter Chase Cockrell gave way to Ridgell on the mound. Josh Gilmore's bunt single loaded the bases and, one out later, Davis was hit by a pitch to force in the Gators' final run.
Bastrop scored six runs on only one hit — Cade Cantrell's RBI infield single — in the bottom of the fifth to put the 10-run rule into effect. Key drove in the deciding run with an RBI groundout to shortstop.
“This was a good way to start the tournament,” Bastrop coach Whit Whitlock said. “Chase didn't have his best stuff, but he gutted it out and Dollar came in and did his job. We hit the ball better than we have the past four or five games.
“Delhi Charter's a young team, but they beat Rayville and Franklin Parish. They were good competition.”
Cade Cantrell went 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored to pace the Rams (3-7) offensively. Perkins went 2-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs, Edmonds contributed a pair of singles and Ty Cantrell and Ridgell provided base hits.
Davis doubled and singled for the Gators (6-6) and Stracener and Gilmore beat out bunt singles.
Cockrell struck out four, walked three, hit two and allowed three hits in 4 1/3 innings for the win, with Ridgell picking up the save.
Zeigler was charged with the loss for the Gators, with Ramshur finishing up.
Notes: Bastrop first baseman Cade Cantrell was named to the All-Northeast Louisiana soccer team by the Monroe News-Star.
