Prairie View scored twice in the top of the eighth and Matt Reed pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the home half of the inning to preserve the Spartans' 14-12 victory over Franklin Academy in a three and a half hour marathon Thursday evening.
With the score tied at 12, Brandon Jacobs reached on a leadoff error in the Prairie View eighth and crossed home with the go-ahead run as Austin McDonald singled and continued to second on a misplay. With still nobody out, Andrew Jenkins singled McDonald home with an insurance run.
Franklin loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, before Reed induced a game-ending groundout to shortstop Chyenne Mayo.
Prairie View spotted the Cougars four runs in the bottom of the first, before responding with three in the second, one in the third and four in the fourth to grab an 8-4 lead.
FA reclaimed the upper hand, 10-8, with a six-run fourth, only to see the Spartans put up four in the fifth. Down 12-10, the Cougars tied it with two in the sixth.
McDonald jabbed three singles as the Spartans out-hit the Cougars 14-7. Reed doubled and singled, Brandon Jacobs and Jenkins whacked two singles and Mayo, Tristen Shanks, Maclendon Sharp, Josh Daigle and Layne Gray singled.
Reed struck out eight while holding the Cougars to three runs over the final 4 2/3 innings to secure the win in relief of Sharp.
