Maclendon Sharp went 3-for-3 and made a spectacular catch in center field to back the combined three-hit pitching of Brandon Jacobs and Layne Gray as Prairie View shellacked Franklin Academy 7-1 in the finale of the PVA Tournament on Saturday night.
Prairie View (6-1) also defeated Tri-County (Miss.) 6-2 on Friday night and Tallulah 10-0 Saturday afternoon to complete the tournament with a 3-0 record.
Starting MAIS District 3-2A play at home on Tuesday, the Spartans face off against Central Hinds. Game times are 4 p.m. for junior varsity and 6 p.m. for varsity. Sharp, a junior lefthander, will get the call on the mound for the Spartans.
Allowing only seven hits in the three five-inning tournament games, the Spartans outscored their opponents by a collective margin of 23-3.
Tristen Shanks set the tone by firing a two-hitter against Tri-County, the No. 2-ranked team in Class 1A.
"For a sophomore to throw a game like that against a good team says a lot," Prairie View coach Dan Smart said. "Tristen spots his fastball real well — that's what sets him apart. All of our pitchers are pitching well right now. Matt (Reed) has done a real good job in relief this year. He shut Franklin down Thursday night (in a regular season game)."
Through the first two weeks of the season, the only area of the Spartans' game that Smart is disappointed in is base running.
"The only thing I can really complain about is our base running," Smart said. "We have made some bad base running errors. I think it's from being too aggressive. It's hard to knock them for being too aggressive, but still, we have to be under control."
Lights were added to the Spartans' baseball/softball field recently, enabling the school to host its first-ever on-campus baseball tournament.
"It was a very successful tournament," Smart said. "Everybody seemed to enjoy the field and the new lights. All of the schools that came to the tournament said they would be back next year."

Breaking a 1-1 tie, the Spartans scored four in the bottom of the third and two in the fourth to upend the Cougars.
Prairie View's first six batters reached safely to start the third.
Tristen Shanks and Maclendon Sharp opened the outburst with back-to-back singles and four straight batters drew walks, enabling the Spartans to grab a 5-1 lead.
Sharp's diving catch for the first out of the fifth helped cement the victory.
At the plate, Sharp lashed three singles, stole three bases and scored a pair of runs and Shanks added a base hit.
Brandon Jacobs went three innings for the win, while Gray struck out three of the seven batters he faced over the final two innings to gain the save.
Prairie View 10, Tallulah 0
Josh Daigle went 2-for-2 with three RBI and two runs scored and Austin McDonald and Levi Humphrey teamed up on a one-hit shutout as the Spartans stopped Tallulah.
Wasting no time, the Spartans' first five runners made their way aboard during a five-run first.
Chyenne Mayo and Tristen Shanks walked, Maclendon Sharp and McDonald singled and Josh Daigle doubled, helping the Spartans open up an early 5-0 lead.
Prairie View put up four more in the third and one in the fifth.
McDonald allowed only one hit through three innings for the win. Humphrey punched out four in two perfect innings of relief to preserve the shutout.

Prairie View 6, Tri-County 2
Tristen Shanks threw a two-hitter and Chyenne Mayo went 2-for-2 as Prairie View turned back Tri-County.
Trailing 2-0, the Spartans plated three runs without the benefit of a hit in the second and tacked on three more in the third.
Mayo's RBI single helped the Spartans pad their lead to 6-2 after three full innings.
Settling down after a shaky start, Shanks held the Rebels scoreless over the final three frames. The sophomore righthander fanned 10, walked three and hit one.
Offensively for the Spartans, Mayo was 2-for-2 with a walk and Austin McDonald and Matt Reed singled.
