Making school history, the Prairie View Lady Spartans handled Mt. Salus 68-51 in the opening game of the MAIS Overall Tournament at Mississippi College on Tuesday afternoon.
It was Prairie View's first win at the Overall Tournament in seven tries, a stretch which includes four boys and three girls games.
While Dani Anderson (17 points, 12 rebounds, 3 blocked shots) took care of the inside, Erika Guerrero and Kristen Oliphant combined to nail seven 3-pointers.
“We didn't shoot the ball very well,” Prairie View coach Ed Bain said. “Every bucket we made was either a layup, a putback or a 3-pointer. Dani and Erika made our only two two-point field goals from the baseline.”
Prairie View (30-7), the No. 3 seed from Class 2A, outscored the Eagles, the Class 1A No. 3 seed, in every quarter.
Leading 15-11 at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Spartans widened the margin to 35-23 at halftime and 52-38 at the end of three.
“We hurt them with the press,” Bain said. “They got a lot of their points by beating the press, but we were able to score more points off the press.”
Prairie View committed 23 turnovers, but still came out on the plus side in turnover margin.
“We had 25 steals, but we turned the ball over too much,” Bain said. “Our turnovers weren't against the press. We just kept throwing the ball away.”
On a positive note, the Lady Spartans crashed the offensive glass for 27 second-chance shots.
Guerrero hit four 3-pointers to finish with 14 points and Oliphant drained a trio of trifectas for 13 points to accompany Anderson in double figures. Tori Simmons added eight points and six steals, Amery Clark pitched in eight points and five steals, Kaylah Hobbs collected six points and 10 rebounds and Jay Hicks contributed two points and four steals.
Prairie View advances to play defending Overall Tournament champion Starkville, owners of a 50-game winning streak, on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
“We're going to try our best to keep it from getting ugly,” Bain said.
