At the request of Bastrop High School Principal Staci Pullen, the Morehouse Parish Sheriff's Office conducted a drug sweep Monday at BHS.
A drug detection dog was brought into the school and several classrooms were checked, along with hallways and the student parking lot. While no drugs were found on students or in the school, the canine officer did “hit” on a vehicle in the parking lot.
The vehicle was parked on the school campus by Adron Greenwood, 17, 11055 Whipplepool, who was issued a citation for possession of marijuana. He cooperated with the deputies and left campus as soon as the citation was given. The suspected marijuana was sent to the crime lab for further testing.
Pullen said she is committed to keeping the campus safe and free from harm.
"We get the dog to come through as often as we can," Pullen stated. "I, as well as other members of the staff, want to provide a safe environment for all students at Bastrop High."
Pullen also said there are very specific guidelines mandated in the student policy manuel in the substance abuse policy section of the Morehouse Parish School Board. She said students are suspended pending a hearing, and depending on their age, may also be arrested.
The Morehouse Parish School Board policy for students suspended for alleged drugs is as follows...
Should any student be suspended or expelled from a public school operated by the Morehouse Parish School Board arising out of the student's possession, use or distribution, or being under the influence of alcohol, narcotics, or any controlled dangerous substance or other drug, the student so suspended shall not be readmitted to any public school operated by the Morehouse Parish School Board until such time as the student has either undergone counseling as approved by the Morehouse Parish School Board Safe and Drug Free Coordinator or has made such appropriate arrangements to undergo such counseling as approved by the Morehouse Parish School Board Safe and Drug Free Coordinator. Should a student receive the approval for counseling from the Morehouse Parish School Board Safe and Drug Free Coordinator and then be readmitted to school and ultimately not complete said approved counseling, the student will again then be suspended or expelled without further hearing until such time as the Morehouse Parish School Board Safe and Drug Free Coordinator approves the student's re-entry into school.
